Welcome to the Norwegian FHIR Hackathon 2026. Join the Norwegian healthcare informatics community for a day of learning, collaboration, and problem-solving. Discuss use cases, test ideas, share experiences, or dive into the technology with hands-on coding exercises.

The Norwegian FHIR hackathon is a free event sponsored by HL7 Norway and is part of the EHIN pre-conference program. HL7 Norway cooperates with NHN, Helsedirektoratet, Bedredelt, NAV, NoMA and IHE Norge to make the hackathon happen.

The hackathon is a in-person event (there will be no live streaming or online meeting from the Hackathon).

Tracks

The various tracks of the hackathon cover a wide range of current interoperability topics, including municipality services, SMART on FHIR, Document sharing, medication databases and IDMP, and EHDS. We provide a dedicated FHIR 101 track for those who are just getting started with FHIR, or need a refresher of the basic concepts.

Why YOU should participate

The event will be of value to anyone working with information systems in healthcare, including developers, architects, and project managers.

  • Developers: FHIR builds on technologies you already know and love, like JSON, HTTP, and REST. Libraries are available for many popular programming languages. The hackathon is a great opportunity to fill in the gaps to become an expert FHIR implementer. Learn about the FHIR data models and the open source tools and applications provided by the FHIR community.
  • Architects: Explore how FHIR fits into the architecture of modern healthcare information systems. Compare different implementation patterns and approaches, and learn where FHIR works well alongside existing standards, APIs, integration platforms, and legacy systems. Exchange experiences with other architects and gain practical insight into designing solutions that are interoperable, maintainable, and ready to evolve.
  • Project managers: Successful interoperability is about more than technology. It requires agreement across organizations, professions, vendors, and systems about what information should be exchanged and how. The hackathon is an arena for implementation leaders to explore how FHIR can create value, identify the decisions and dependencies that make or break interoperability projects, and learn how interfaces can be agreed upon, documented, tested, and validated in practice.
  • Healthcare professionals: Get insight into the information structures and data flows that power the technology you use every day. Help bridge the gap between technology and real-world clinical work, and give your input on what information and what software tools would make a real positive impact on patient care.

To get the most out of the hackathon, we advise participants to prepare in advance.

  • Choose a primary track to focus on.
  • Read the track description and check prerequisites and track-specific recommended preparation.
  • Attend the online hackathon kick-off meeting November 2, 2026 09:00-11:00 (online only).

Some basic knowledge of the HL7 FHIR standard is valuable, but no prerequisite.
The FHIR 101 track is dedicated to an introduction to FHIR.

At HL7 Norway, we believe a seamless flow of health information improves patient outcomes, relieves the burden on healthcare professionals, and benefits society through a more efficient healthcare system. The foundation of meaningful data exchange is a common language. That is why, as an affiliate of HL7 International, we promote knowledge of the HL7 healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR, CQL, and CDS Hooks in Norway and across the Nordic countries.

We recognize that interoperability requires more than technology. To connect systems, we must also connect the people designing, developing, and using them and build a shared understanding of the problems we are trying to solve. The Norwegian FHIR Hackathon is a welcoming, open space where healthcare informatics professionals can come together to learn about HL7 standards and how they can help solve current healthcare interoperability challenges.
